Improving our Facilities

News - TNH SparksEven as the RVI celebrated its centenary in 2006, work was already well underway to make sure that our hospitals would be ready to meet the demands of the next hundred years.

This mammoth redevelopment includes the creation of a landmark children’s hospital for the North East at the RVI, as well as one of the best-equipped A&E departments in the whole of the UK and a fully integrated trauma centre. Across the city, the Freeman Hospital will boast a dedicated Renal Centre as well as the new state-of-the-art Northern Cancer Care Centre (NCCC).

This passion for innovation isn’t simply limited to buildings. We’re changing the very nature of a visit to hospital too. That’s why our patients can look forward to more privacy – 50% of wards at the NCCC will be single occupancy. We’re also introducing a 50-seat cinema at the RVI that will screen the very latest films, while the designers of our new ‘penthouse’ area at the children’s hospital should have a good idea of what teenagers want; they’re teenagers themselves! Let’s be honest, spending time in hospital isn’t number one on most kids’ lists of things to do.

But, why should it be boring?
