The Trust was formed on 1st April 1998 following a merger of the former Royal Victoria and Associated Hospitals NHS Trust and the Freeman Group of Hospitals NHS Trust and became an NHS Foundation Trust on 1st June 2006. We are currently one of the largest teaching Trusts in the country employing over 10,000 members of staff and operating with a revenue budget of over £540 million.
The Trust consists of three main sites, as follows:
Based in Newcastle City Centre and adjacent to the University the RVI has a wide range of services, which include Acute Medicine, General Surgery, Burns and Plastic Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Anaesthetics and Radiology.
The RVI site is currently undergoing major changes under the Private Finance Initiative (PFI), the cost of the project is in excess of £300 million and included in the plans are a new Accident and Emergency Department built alongside new Neurosciences, Children's and other core acute departments.
Situated in the East End of the City and similar to the RVI in offering a wide range of services which include General Medicine, General Surgery, ENT, Renal Medicine, Urology, Liver and Heart transplantation, Care of the Elderly and Cardiothoracics.
As with the RVI site the Freeman will undergo changes both cosmetically and to current services with new Cancer and Renal Services Centres planned to open in 2008.
Currently the third site which is based in the West of Newcastle. Under the PFI the acute services currently based on the NGH site will move across to the RVI (except Cancer, which will move to the Freeman).
A selection of the current services provided on this site includes Accident & Emergency, Neurosciences, Infectious Diseases, Acute Orthopaedics and Paediatrics.
Due to the size of the Trust and the subsequent range of services provided the Trust is pleased to offer a wide range of experience for all trainees within the foundation programme. Each rotation will comprise 3 four-month attachments. These will include attachments to Acute Medicine and General Surgery to satisfy GMC requirements. In addition to a wide variety of medical and surgical specialties a number of opportunities exist for trainees to experience working for 4 months in Critical Care units across the Trust.
Details of each post are varied and all F1 posts within the Trust have been deemed suitable for F1 training by the Postgraduate Institute. Available posts for 2009 are detailed in the attachment below.
The second year of the programme is designed to provide a wide portfolio of experience for each trainee in both acute and non-acute specialties. Whilst most posts are within the acute hospital setting there is ample opportunity to experience community based practice including GP.
The F2 programme should complement the experience provided in F1. Rather than expecting you to commit to a specific F2 rotation at this stage, F2 placements will be allocated approximately half way through the F1 year based upon educational need, career preferences and trainee choice, in keeping with the principles of the Foundation Programme.
As a guide, our current F2 programme includes the following specialties:
| Accident & Emergency | Infectious Diseases | Paediatric Surgery |
| Breast Surgery | Intensive Care | Paediatrics |
