Improving our Facilities

‘Transforming the Newcastle Hospitals’ is a major building and reorganisation project for Newcastle Hospitals

Building work started in 2005, and our main aim was to improve facilities at the RVI and Freeman hospitals in Newcastle, and bring services together to improve the quality of patient care.

Largest healthcare modernisation programme in the North East

Costing over £330 million, this is the biggest health project ever seen in the North East, and one of the largest in the country.

This mammoth redevelopment, which is now almost complete, included increasing the number of beds and operating theatres, and providing more modern medical facilities such as laboratories and radiology services.

The RVI has seen a range of redevelopments over its 100 year history. Schemes such as the Leazes and Claremont wings were built around the Victoria Wing, but the new developments bring the most modern facilities to the site. They also address many traffic and pedestrian flow issues faced by the RVI, and access for pedestrians and vehciles has been improved. A new main entrance, new car parks and a new route onto Richardson Road for ambulances have been created. The famous Peacock Hall and The Chapel still remain as they are.

Within the RVI, the main projects include:

Great North Children’s Hospital

We developed the Great North Children’s Hospital at the RVI to provide a wide range of services for children across the North East and beyond. The GNCH is based in the rounded green building at the RVI - a new landmark facing onto Queen Victoria Road in Newcastle.

New Victoria Wing

An impressive wing  – the New Victoria Wing – at the RVI includes the Outpatients Department, the modern MediCinema, Neurosciences Centre, Dermatology Outpatients, Women's Services, Critical Care and Infectious Diseases Unit.

Emergency Department

One of the best-equipped A and E departments in the whole of the UK is housed at the RVI, with a fully integrated trauma centre, Minor Injuries Unit and Children's Emergency Department. We also developed a helipad on top of the New Victoria Wing to quickly transfer patients for treament.

Freeman Hospital

The Freeman Hospital expanded by about 25% following the construction of the new buildings at the rear of the site. An 810 space multi-storey car park is also in operation. The new developments, which have their own entrances and are linked into the existing hospital, include:

Northern Centre for Cancer Care

The state-of-the-art Northern Centre for Cancer Care was developed at the Freeman Hospital to bring together a wide range of treatment services for cancer patients.
