The Trust is delighted to have formed an alliance with MediCinema, a national charity supported by the biggest names in the British Film Industry, to develop a state-of-the-art purpose built cinema in the heart of the development at the RVI bringing the magic and the escapism of the silver screen to both paediatric and adult patients. The state-of-the-art auditorium, which will hold around 55 people, will enable access for patients in beds and wheelchairs and their families.
MediCinema is an escapist experience, a unique occasion that provides therapeutic benefit to patients by relieving stress and boredom of the daily routine of life on the hospital ward. It will show the latest box office releases, to be provided by the major film distributors, on a big screen with 35 mm projector, Dolby surround sound and tiered seating. It will provide an all-encompassing cinematic experience, with the added reassurance of knowing that fully qualified nursing staff are in attendance throughout.
The Newcastle project will be the first purpose built hospital cinema to be constructed in the UK and will come complete with 35mm projection, Dolby Surround Sound and specialist Cinema lighting.
The MediCinema opened in December 2009 as part of the first phase of development at the RVI.

The installation of MediCinema at the RVI has been made possible by the generosity and support of a number of Newcastle organisations and companies including Fenwick and the Newcastle Healthcare Charity who demonstrated an early wish to support the initiative. MediCinema is especially grateful to them, as well as to Laing O’Rourke, Healthcare Support (Newcastle) Ltd and Interservefm and the British Board of Film Classification for their seed-corn funding.
