After 4 years of construction, the 'New Victoria Wing' becomes the latest building to be completed at the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) Doors opened to patients at the end of April 2009.
During the spring and summer of 2009 many of our services moved from the old Victoria Wing into the new building. In addition many outpatient services will also move from Leazes Wing. In 2010 services including Accident and Emergency will move from the Newcastle General Hospital.
The construction work - including major demolition works - will continue throughout this period and there may be some disruption around the hospital site as this progresses. We shall of course endeavour to keep any disruption to a minimum.
In the meantime we hope the New Victoria Wing will serve the people of the North East as well as the Old Victoria Wing has for the last century.
The Victoria Wing Outpatient Department and all of its services moved in April 2009 to its new home in the New Victoria Wing.
This new department houses a brand new clinic space for all main outpatients clinics currently provided in Victoria Wing Outpatient Department, as well as some other services from Leazes Wing. These will include:
Shops, cafes and a new restaurant are included in the Atrium.
The New Victoria Wing is situated next to the Great North Children's Hospital - the large circular, copped clad building which you can see from Queen Victoria Road.
You will be able to gain access to the clinics in the New Victoria Wing in two ways:
As you approach the New Victoria Wing you will see signs giving directions for where you need to go depending on which clinic or service you have come for. There will be directions throughout the building to help you find your way around and a receptionist will also be availble to help you with any enquiries you might have.
Please note that this entrance way into the new building is temporary only until further works have been completed to the left of the building.
