Surgical Rotation

The Newcastle Hospitals launched The Newcastle Surgical Rotation (NSR) programme in 2014, and we have established a rotation involving several surgical specialties as well as Anatomy Demonstration.

It is not a GMC-accredited training post, but we are committed to ensure that the NSR doctors receive valuable education and training.

The clinical experience, clinical and educational supervision and competency progression is exactly the same as an accredited training programme. There is also a formal teaching programme to aid examination preparation, as well as an opportunity to gain experience in basic surgical techniques in the Newcastle Surgical Training Centre.

These pages give you information about:

High quality surgical experience

The Newcastle Surgical Rotations are aimed at people interested in pursuing a surgical career and looking to gain exposure to, and experience in, a wide range of high quality surgical placements.

The rotations would be suitable for post-Foundation doctors who are considering a career in surgery, but have not secured a place in a core surgical training programme. The experience gained in this rotation will enhance your chances of a successful application next year.

The rotations would also be suitable for more experienced doctors to gain further experience at core surgical level. All year one posts include a four month Anatomy Demonstration attachment in Newcastle University Medical School.

While our surgical rotations are not currently accredited training posts, the content is mapped to mirror Core Surgical Training. All posts are initially for a period of 12 months, but with the possibility of a year two post - subject to adequate progression.

There is career counselling available from experienced surgeons who will be able to advise about the pros and cons of undertaking a second year. Where a second year is offered, the Surgical Rotation Co-ordinator will organise this to expose candidates to different specialties.

The Newcastle Surgical Rotation doctors have access to personal development opportunities within our Trust, as well as study leave entitlement.

The NSR doctors work with the online Intercollegiate Surgical Curriculum Programme (ISCP), a knowledge and skill syllabus that includes assessment and appraisal tools. The NSR doctors will be expected to gather appropriate evidence for an Annual Review of Competency Progression (ARCP) at the end of the year in post.
