Work Experience

As part of its commitment to developing the future health care workforce, the Trust offers the opportunities for individuals to find out more about potential careers in the NHS through its annual Work Experience Programmes.

Provision of Work Experience by the Trust is voluntary and due to the high demand for work experience, the need to meet placement requirements for a wide range of other health care students, and ensuring that patient care is prioritised, the Trust has to limit the availability of placements. The Trust has recently revised its policy and available programmes as follows:

Please Note: Applications from school children/students under 18 are managed via the Connexions Service and the Schools/College only. Direct applications to the Trust are not accepted for school children/students.

Programmes Available: Year 10 Students – Newcastle Students only

  • Taster/Open Day on Careers in the NHS
  • Three-day hospital based observational placement (clinical and non clinical)

2009 Dates:

Taster Day – 18th February 2009

Placement – 23rd - 25th March 2009

Please note that the five-day placement for non-medical professional groups is subject to availability and may vary in content and dates depending on professional qualification being undertaken. Details provided on application.

2009 Dates:

Five-Day placement (Nursing or Medicine – will need to state which is required) - July 6th July 2009 & 13th July 2009

Mature Students (observational placements)

The Trust will endeavour to facilitate work experience for non-school aged children, but again subject to availability. Individuals will need to demonstrate a genuine intention to work in hospital based health care settings. Priority will be given to those actively applying for professional training.

A minimum of eight weeks notice is required for these requests, and a placement is not guaranteed.  Placements will typically be of 2 – 3 days duration.
