Public meeting: Open Discussion on Live Liver Transplantation

Live donor liver transplantation has been carried out in other countries for more than 15 years and in the UK the first ever NHS live liver transplant was successfully carried out at St James’ Hospital in Leeds on 21st June 2007.

In this procedure part of the liver of a healthy donor is removed and transplanted into a patient with liver failure. The remaining liver in the donor regrows within weeks to almost its normal size.

Currently one-in-five liver transplant patients die while on the waiting list due to a severe shortage of donated organs. Live Liver Transplantation may hold the key to saving many of these lives.

The Trust intends to offer NHS Live Liver Transplantation from early this year and would like to explain the procedure to members of the public and to the press.

You are invited to attend this public meeting which will be held at 7.00 p.m. on Wednesday 27th January 2010 in Lecture Theatre 1 at the Freeman Hospital, High Heaton, Newcastle upon Tyne NE7 7DN. It is expected that the meeting will last approximately one hour. You may park free of charge for this meeting in the on site multi storey car park by displaying this notice in your vehicle windscreen.
