Newcastle’s Audiology Clinics at Hexham General Hospital are changing

From Monday 11th September, audiology patients living in and around the Hexham area will be able to access the weekly repair service held at Hexham General Hospital by appointment only, rather than the current ‘walk in’ approach.

Ear, Nose and Throat specialists from Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital are making changes to the current arrangements following the results of a recent survey of patients’ views, and regular feedback received by the clinic.

Mr Ian Johnson, consultant ENT surgeon who runs an outreach clinic at Hexham General Hospital said: “Our hearing aid repairs service in Hexham is extremely popular with around 40 to 50 patients attending the drop-in sessions each week.

“We know that many of our patients like to get their hearing aids repaired as quickly as possible, so they can get on with the rest of their day. This often means patients turn up before the clinic opens, to ensure so that they are seen first by our audiologists.

“We try to make sure that everyone who attends our clinics are seen as quickly as possible. However, the number of patients who arrive in the early morning, makes it extremely difficult for our audiology staff to provide the outstanding service our patients expect, in a timely fashion .”

To avoid unnecessary lengthy waits, from mid-September appointments can be made by calling the Freeman Hospital’s audiology department and will be arranged at 15 minute intervals. The telephone number is 0191 223 1043 and patients should choose option 2. Alternatively patients can e-mail tnu-tr.audiology@nhs.net

Following the introduction of this new system, patients will no longer be seen without an appointment.

Pauline Bosson, Head of Audiology added: “We really want to make our services as easily accessible as possible. By arranging appointments at a time to suit our patients, we can make sure everyone is seen without having to wait for an audiologist to become available.

“There are also a number of other options available for patients in need of basic hearing aid repairs with drop in sessions run by national charity Action on Hearing Loss (formerly RNID) at health centres based in Allendale, Bellingham, Haltwhistle, Haydon Bridge and Hexham’s Burn Brae Medical Group.

Pauline continued: “Our colleagues at Action on Hearing Loss also provide a marvellous service, holding repair sessions in many remote places across Northumberland and beyond either once a month or every 2 months.”

Anne Shilton, ‘Hear to Help’ project co-ordinator said: “We are pleased to be able to support and help the NHS during the transition period of changing to a walk-in to appointment system at Hexham.  We’ll be there on a Monday afternoon for a few weeks to offer re-tubing, batteries and general information about hearing loss.  We also offer regular sessions at other venues which are open to all.”

ENT specialists will continue to run their weekly clinic all day every Monday, with audiology hearing assessment and heard aid fitting clinics every Tuesday.
