Dr Sarah Pape - Consultant Burns and Plastic Surgeon receives OBE

The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is pleased to announce that Dr Sarah Pape, Consultant Burns and Plastic Surgeon at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, has attended Buckingham Palace to receive her OBE from the Prince of Wales, in recognition of her work with burns patients in the UK and Romania.

Dr Pape was appointed to her current post in 1995. She has dedicated her career to developing adult and paediatric burn services in Newcastle, which is now recognised as one of the leading Burns Centres in the UK. She has developed pioneering technology for the assessment of burn depth, a technique that is now used worldwide.

In 2015 Dr Pape volunteered to fly to Romania to assist with the care of over 150 young people who had been injured in a night club fire in Bucharest. She was able to provide expert clinical advice to the doctors who were looking after the patients. However, despite the excellence of the care that the patients had received to that point, it soon became clear that the system was simply overwhelmed by the number of patients, 88 of whom were critically ill.

Dr Pape therefore worked with the Romanian government, local medical teams and colleagues from other European countries to organise the air evacuation of some of the patients to burns centres in the rest of Europe. She personally escorted 10 patients by air to the UK, two of whom were transferred by road to Newcastle upon Tyne where they had a lengthy stay with a successful outcome.

When asked her reaction to this honour Dr Pape commented: “Whilst I am delighted that my work has been recognised by Her Majesty I must also acknowledge the contribution played by many colleagues over the past 35 years, including those who trained me and inspired me to specialise in this area and the teams of healthcare staff who have supported me throughout my career. And none of this would have been possible without the support and encouragement of my family and friends.”
