Newcastle Hospitals calls on patients to share their memories and help celebrate 70 years of the NHS

On 5 July 2018 the NHS, one of the nation’s most loved institutions will celebrate its 70th anniversary and the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is appealing to patients, staff and members of the public to share their stories, photos and memories of healthcare in Newcastle over the last 70 years.

The Trust will join with other healthcare organisations across the country to take part in NHS England’s NHS 70 celebrations, recognising the advances in science, technology and information and to thank the extraordinary staff who have helped transform the health and wellbeing of the nation.

The stories will help form an exhibition showcasing the NHS in Newcastle since 1948. The Trust would like to hear from:

  • Staff members past and present who were working in healthcare in 1948 when the NHS was established. Or those who have worked in the Trust and would like to share their stories and memories of their time working in healthcare.
  • Patients who have fond memories of the Trust’s hospitals and staff.
  • Generations of families who have worked at the Trust and would be willing to share their stories.
  • Anyone who was amongst the first babies born in the NHS

Louise Robson, Joint Acting Chief Executive at the Newcastle Hospitals said: “The NHS turning 70 is a perfect opportunity to take a look back at the remarkable developments in healthcare over the last 70 years and to celebrate the achievements of this world renowned institution.

“Our exhibition will help us to tell the story of the NHS in Newcastle over the last 70 years and is one of a number of events the Trust has planned to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the NHS. We would love to hear from anyone who would be happy to share their memories of the Trust’s hospitals, either as a patient or as a member of staff.”

The NHS was launched on 5 July 1948 by health secretary Aneurin Bevan at Park Hospital in Manchester with the aim of brining good healthcare to all, providing services that were free for all at the point of delivery.

For the first time it brought together hospitals, doctors, nurses, pharmacists, opticians and dentists under one umbrella organisation. The NHS is now the UK’s largest employer, with over 1.5 million staff and deals with over 1 million patients every 36 hours.
