Newcastle Hospitals come out top as patients rate ‘overall experience’ the best in the North East

PATIENTS have rated Newcastle Hospitals amongst the best in the country in a new report published by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) today (13th June).

The ‘Outstanding’ trust - which runs the Freeman Hospital, Royal Victoria Infirmary and some services on the Campus for Ageing and Vitality as well as community services – received the highest score for ‘overall patient experience’ across the North East.

The inpatient survey highlighted the organisation performed ‘better than other trusts’ in 21 of the 61 questions asked and ‘about the same’ as other trusts in the majority of others.

Areas highlighted as ‘significantly better’ included how much information patients received about their care and treatment; privacy during examination; cleanliness of the wards and rooms; help, emotional support, confidence and trust in all disciplines of staff.

Patients also responded very positively to questions about being involved in decisions about discharge, receiving enough notice and being well advised about their medication including side effects to watch out for and who to contact if worried after leaving hospital.

Dame Jackie Daniel, Chief Executive for the Newcastle Hospitals said: “This is fantastic news and testament to the 14,500 staff who work tirelessly across all our community and hospital services.

“Since my appointment in May, I have visited numerous wards and departments, and seen first-hand the tremendous and compassionate care our teams are delivering.”

Dame Jackie added: “Despite these tremendous results, we are certainly not complacent. We may be one of only a handful of CQC rated ‘Outstanding’ trusts in the UK, but we can always do better and I know our staff will continue to strive to improve the quality of care that we provide.”

This survey looked at the experiences of 72,778 people who were discharged from an NHS acute hospital in July 2017.

Between August 2017 and January 2018, a questionnaire was sent to 1,250 recent inpatients at each trust.

Responses were received from 516 patients at The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
