Patients rate Newcastle Hospitals amongst best in country for their inpatient care

Patients have rated Newcastle Hospitals amongst the best performing trusts in the country for their inpatient care.

The results of the Care Quality Commission’s annual survey of inpatients published today (Thursday 20 June) placed the organisation as performing ‘better than expected’ in a number of key areas.

The survey asked patients for their views on aspects of their care, such as whether they felt they were treated with dignity and respect and whether they had confidence and trust in staff.

Of the 639 people that responded, 99% of patients reported that they had confidence and trust in the doctors who cared for them and 98% of patients felt they were treated with respect and dignity.

Patient feedback also placed Newcastle Hospitals highly for:

  • Providing enough privacy when being examined
  • Patients being admitted as soon as was necessary
  • Staff working well together
  • The support after leaving hospital to help recovery and managing their condition

The Trust, whose main hospitals include the Freeman Hospital and the RVI, was also banded as being better than the expected score (average of Trusts) in:

  • Accident and Emergency Department
  • The Hospital and Ward
  • Doctors
  • Care and Treatment
  • Leaving Hospital

Chief Executive Dame Jackie Daniel said: “We are thrilled to be seen as a national leader for our inpatient care which is clearly demonstrated by these latest results.

“Listening to our patients, carers and their loved ones about their experiences is essential to help ensure the care we provide is of the excellence standard we strive to deliver. The outcome of this recent inpatient survey is testament to the hard work and dedication of all our staff.”

Last month, Newcastle Hospitals was rated outstanding for a second time by the Care Quality Commission – one of only five in the country - following an inspection earlier this year.
