Newcastle nurse working with terminally-ill patients up for top accolade

A nurse who has worked with terminally ill patients to develop clinical trial information has been shortlisted for a prestigious UK award.

Ben Hood, who works at Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, is a finalist in the Cancer Research UK-sponsored Excellence in Cancer Research category of the RCNi Nurse Awards 2019.

The profession’s top accolade for nursing excellence attracted almost 700 entries this year.

He will find out whether he has won at a ceremony in the Westminster Park Plaza hotel, London, on July 3. The RCN Nurse of the Year 2019, selected from all the category winners, will be announced on the night.

Newcastle CRUK (Cancer Research UK) senior nurse Ben Hood developed multimedia patient information resources for early clinical trials to support patients attending the Sir Bobby Robson Cancer Trials Research Centre who have no proven treatment options left.

He coordinated all patient and public involvement (PPI) discussion groups and drafted and proofread all the documents that emerged from the groups, ensuring the patient voice won when it conflicted with the trust’s policies on publishing information.

He has kept patients as the driving force for the project, supporting PPI members at public events to discuss its focus. He has developed a resources website, produced staff video interviews, and is now leading on development of a phone app

Managing director Rachel Armitage says: ‘Nurses in all areas are increasingly under pressure but they still deliver exceptional innovation and outstanding, compassionate patient care day in, day out.

‘The RCNi Nurse Awards are a chance to recognise the achievements of nurses like Ben and showcase nursing excellence.

‘Our judging panel has faced an almost impossible task in selecting a shortlist from hundreds of high-quality entries this year. We look forward to celebrating the strength and diversity of our profession at the awards in July.’
