Fudge will be a real treat at this year’s Great North Run

The Great North Children's Hospital, based at the RVI in Newcastle is one of the biggest children’s hospitals in the UK caring for thousands of children every year.

Fudge hopes to raise at least £850, and all funds will go the Foundation to help provide continual developments in medical equipment and treatment techniques, as well as providing a better environment for children, teenagers, their families and carers.

To help Fudge’s training for the half marathon, the physiotherapy team at the RVI have offered the mascot some advice. Fudge attended an appointment with Jemma Bell, Senior Paediatric Physiotherapist at the RVI where she was able to give advice on a specific exercise programme to follow, to prepare for the big day.

“Fudge has taken on a huge challenge by doing the Great North Run and is putting in a great effort for a fantastic cause,” said Jemma.

“I wish our mascot the best of luck for the run and there will be members of the Children’s Physiotherapy Team at Great North Children’s Hospital Foundation tent in the Charity Village at the end of the run, to help Fudge and the other runners recover.”

Whilst at the RVI’s physio department, Fudge met with 9 year old Leah who has Cystic Fibrosis. Since Leah was a baby, she has had regular physiotherapy support to help with her breathing and physical activity. Leah showed Fudge the different exercises which she carries out regularly, she also shared stories of exercise tests which she does with the physiotherapists who care for her.

After exploring the physio department Fudge even went for a dip in the hydrotherapy pool! Leah then showed Fudge the Great North Children’s Hospital’s outdoor play area and they played hopscotch, football and many other fun games.

Leah was impressed with Fudge’s goal to run the Great North Run and thinks the mascot will do great on the day.

Good luck Fudge, we know you can do it!
