Easy as ABC! New outpatient appointments booking centre opens at Newcastle Hospitals

A NEW appointments’ booking centre (ABC) has opened at Newcastle Hospitals, offering an improved service for patients who need to attend outpatient clinics at all our hospital sites. 

The centre, based at Regent Point in Gosforth, houses a dedicated booking team who are on hand to respond to the needs of thousands of patients who are referred to the Trust from a variety of sources. 

It will provide a single booking and call handling service for patients who need to attend outpatient clinics across all out Hospital sites  and will initially be open between 8.30am and 5pm, Mondays to Fridays. 

Previously, outpatient teams were based in different locations across the hospital sites which could lead to variations in the service provided to patients with some experiencing difficulties reaching a member of staff to change an appointment or ask further questions.

Trust Chief Executive, Dame Jackie Daniel, who officially opened the centre today, said: “We are delighted to officially open our new appointments booking centre which has brought our outpatient teams under the same roof to share their knowledge and experience with each other.  

“Advances in technology are providing new ways of working and the centre, allowing us to introduce new and more efficient systems which will benefit both our staff and our patients. 

“Since opening, the centre has taken almost 76,000 calls and there have been thousands of new and review appointments scheduled, along with clinic management requests, offering an outstanding service for our patients.” 

Under the new initiative, which covers the majority of clinical specialties, patients will receive the same level of service, irrespective of which clinical area they are referred to for treatment.

There is also one phone number for patients to call 0191 2824444, which is a local rate number from landlines, wherever you are in the UK. 

The centre also benefits our staff who will work together as one team for the first time, providing them with more support and opportunities to gain expertise in new areas. 

Staff have also remained on the outpatient reception desks across the Trust  offering the same high standard of assistance for patients when they come into hospital for their appointment.
