The 'Robinson Runaways' take on the Kielder 10k

Transplant patient Sheena Robinson, along with over 30 of her friends and family will take part in the Active Northumberland Kielder 10K this Saturday (12 October), to raise money for the Institute of Transplantation at the Freeman Hospital, Newcastle.

In 2002, Sheena was diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension, a type of high blood pressure that affects the arteries in the lungs, making it harder for blood to flow, causing shortness of breath and fainting.

After her diagnosis, Sheena’s condition quickly deteriorated and she was unable to exercise or do simple everyday activities. She was put on the transplant list for a double lung transplant in 2018 and after only three weeks, a donor was found.

Sheena’s lifesaving operation took place at the Freeman Hospital in August 2018.

Now, just over a year later, she has recovered remarkably and has started to enjoy exercise again.

By completing the Kielder 10k, Sheena hopes to raise awareness of the importance of organ donation, as well as raising vital funds for the unit.

“I will be walking the route instead of running it; however I am incredibly proud to be able to do even that, having not exercised in so many years. My life has completely changed after my transplant and I really want to raise awareness of how important organ donation is”

The group of over 30 of Sheena’s family and friends, who have aptly named themselves the ‘Robinson Runaways' includes both men and women, of all ages and sporting abilities.

They will each be there to support Sheena and say thank you to the team at the Freeman Hospital who saved her life, by walking or running around the Bull Crag Peninsula of Kielder Water.

"I spent 3 months recovering in hospital after receiving my transplant and I am so thankful for the care I received from the staff, I really wanted to give something back to the unit” explained Sheena.
