Charity matters
It has been estimated that, on average, a person will require the services of their local hospitals four times during their lifetime.
The services provided by Newcastle Hospitals are recognised as being among the best in the country. The Trust provides more specialist services than anywhere else in the UK and has received the CHKS Top 40 Hospitals Award for the past 12 years.
The Trust is directly supported in its aims and activities by two official charities – the Newcastle Healthcare Charity and the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Charity.
Both charities administer the many donations made by our generous public to more than 700 separate charitable funds based at Newcastle’s hospitals. These donations allow us to provide that little bit extra in terms of more sophisticated equipment, additional patient comforts, specialist staff training and funding of local research projects to develop new treatments and technologies.
What happens to the funds we raise?
During 2011/12, the charities provided:
- £1.1 million for new and innovative equipment
- £405,000 for patient comforts and amenities
- £319,000 for specialised staff training and education
- £1.1 million for locally-based medical research

The support provided from charitable funding has enabled us to keep pace with continual developments in medical equipment and treatment regimes. At the same time, it has provided a comfortable and stress-reducing environment, which helps the recovery process for our patients.
It is extremely gratifying when we receive donations for our local hospitals as it not only provides recognition of the care we provide, but also an opportunity to further enhance services and treatment within the hospitals for our future patients.
