Newcastle is a recognised leader in healthcare research and development across a wide range of areas, helping to deliver benefits not only for patients of today, but for generations to come. Working in close collaboration, the Newcastle Hospitals and Newcastle University have created a progressive partnership, Newcastle Biomedicine, dedicated to advancing scientific thinking and clinical practice in areas important to all our futures such as stem cell research, genetics and “ageing and vitality”.
Research grants can be applied for via the Newcastle Hospitals' two healthcare charities (Newcastle Healthcare Charity and the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Charity) which are committed to supporting innovative and high quality research proposals. All research grant applications are considered by the Joint Research Executive Scientific Committee which meets three times a year. The committee, chaired by Professor Judith Goodship, Professor of Genetic Medicine, then makes formal recommendations to the charities.
