Patient and visitor information

Ambulance and public transport

This page gives you details about travelling to hospital by public transport and ambulance.

Ambulance transport

Ambulance transport is available for patients who have a medical condition which means they are unable to make their own way to hospital.

If you feel that you need to request ambulance transport, please speak to your family doctor at least seven days before your hospital appointment.

Once booked, if you need to re-arrange this transport please contact the Ambulance Bureau as soon as possible on:

  • tel: 0191 233 6161

Please be aware that space on ambulances is limited. You can only be accompanied by a carer or relative if you have a specific medical need. Please ask the Ambulance Bureau staff for further information if you are unsure.

You can get more information about using the Patient Transport Service.

Public transport

Each of our hospitals and the International Centre for Life, which houses our Fertility and Genetics Services, are easy to access by public transport.

To help you plan your journey to hospital, visit the Nexus passenger transport website. Here you will find travel details for all public transport including bus routes, Metro, cross-Tyne ferry service, and local rail services.

The following websites may also help you plan your journey to hospital.

Nexus can be contacted on 0191 20 20 747 between 8am – 6pm 7 days a week to assist with any specific public transport advice.
