Recognising our staff

Many different types of staff work for Newcastle Hospitals - from matrons to housekeepers, ward clerks to physiotherapists.

This page helps you identify our staff from the uniforms they wear.

All staff have NHS identity badges with their photographs on the badge - these will be visible at all times.

Doctors

All our doctors wear everyday clothes - their own shirts or blouses, trousers or skirts. You may also see them wearing green or blue surgical gowns.

Matron uniform

Matron

Matrons are senior Nurses who manage a group of wards/departments.

Matrons wear a lilac tunic or dress, or white tunic with lilac epaulettes, and navy trousers.

 

Staff Nurse uniform

Staff Nurse

A Staff Nurse is a Registered Nurse who looks after you during your stay in hospital.

Staff Nurses wear a pale blue and white-striped tunic or dress with navy trousers, or white tunic with blue and white epaulettes with navy trousers.

 

 

 

Housekeeper uniform

Housekeeper

Housekeepers assist you with your care and contribute to house-keeping and administrative duties.

Housekeepers wear a yellow tunic or dress, and brown trousers.

Occupational Therapist uniform

Occupational Therapist

Occupational Therapists may help you become more independent in activities such as washing and dressing, and help plan your discharge home.

Occupational Therapists wear a white tunic with green piping on the sleeves and collar, or a white polo shirt, with green trousers.

 

Ward Clerk uniform

Ward Clerk and Administrative Assistant

Ward Clerks and Administrative Assistants are responsible for greeting and welcoming you to the ward or department, and managing administrative duties.

Ward Clerks and Administrative Assistants wear a navy and white diamond blouse or dress, and navy trousers.

 

 

Sister and Charge Nurse Uniform

Sister and Charge Nurse

A Sister or Charge Nurse is a Registered Nurse who works on the ward or department and is responsible for managing it.

Sisters and Charge Nurses wear a navy tunic or dress with white piping on the sleeves and collar, and navy trousers.

Nursing Healthcare Assistant uniform

Nursing Healthcare Assistant

Nursing Healthcare Assistants work under the supervision of the Sister/Charge Nurse or Staff Nurse, and helps with your personal care.

Nursing Healthcare Assistants wear a beige tunic or dress, and brown trousers.

Domestic Assistant uniform

Domestic Assistant

Domestic Assistants help to ensure that all wards and departments stay clean and free from infection.

Domestic Assistants wear pale green and white striped tunic/dress or navy polo shirt, and navy trousers.

 

Physiotherapist uniform

Physiotherapist

Physiotherapists assess you if you have had an operation or if you need assistance with moving and walking.

Physiotherapists wear a white tunic with navy piping on the sleeve and collar, or a white polo shirt, and navy trousers.

 

Nurse Specialist uniform

Nurse Specialist

Nurse Specialists have specialist knowledge in an area of nursing and support people with specific conditions.

Nurse Specialists wear a royal blue tunic or dress with white piping on the sleeves and collar, and navy trousers.

 

Midwife uniformMidwife

Midwives support you through your pregnancy and childbirth.

Midwives wear pale lilac and white striped tunic or dress, and navy trousers.

 

Dietitian

Dietitians may work with you to promote good nutrition, and prevent and treat food-related problems and disease.

Dietitians wear a navy tunic or dress with red piping on the sleeve and collar, or a navy polo shirt, and navy trousers.

 

 

Porter UniformPorter

Porters provide support to ward and departmental staff by helping to move patients and equipment throughout the hospital.

Porters wear a white shirt, and navy trousers.

Infection Control Nurse UniformInfection Prevention and Control Nurse

Infection Prevention and Control Nurses give specialist advice about cleanliness and prevention of infection.

Infection Prevention and Control Nurses wear a red tunic or dress with navy piping on the sleeve and collar, and navy trousers.

Midwife Specialist UniformMidwife Specialist

Midwife Specialists have specialist knowledge in a specific area of midwifery and supports people with specific conditions.

Research Midwife UniformResearch Midwife

Research Midwives have specialist knowledge about research related to women and babies.

Research Midwives wear a maroon tunic or dress with white piping on the sleeves and collar, with navy trousers.

Radiographer Uniform Radiographer

Radiographers perform x-rays or scans.

Hospital play specialist_nursery nurse uniformHospital Play Specialists/Nursery Nurses

Hospital Play Specialists/Nursery Nurses arrange play activities for children and young people.

They wear a pink and white striped tunic or dress, and navy trousers.

 

 

Audiologist UniformAudiologist 

Audiologists assess your hearing and undertake specialist balance tests for people of all ages.

Audiologists wear a pale blue tunic, and navy trousers.
