The hospitals within The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust are supported by two charities:
and
We rely on charitable donations from trusts, companies and individuals to supplement mainstream NHS funding to pay for training, specialist services, staff and patient amenities, improvements to the hospital environment and pioneering research which means that our patients can often benefit from groundbreaking treatment.
The Charity was formed by a Declaration of Trust dated 16th July 1966 as The Freeman Group of Hospitals NHS Charity and which was amended by a Supplemental Deed dated 17th March 1999 to the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Charity.
The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust acts as the Corporate Trustee and the funds are adminstered by standing committee of the Trust Board know as the Trust (Charitable) Funds Committee.
The Newcastle Healthcare Charity was established on 1st April 2001 as a Section 11 charitable body in accordance with the provisions for the National Health Service Trusts Order 2000 and replaced the former Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals Special Trustees.
Trustees are appointed by the Secretary of State for Health to act on behalf of the charity. They act jointly, working as a team, to ensure that money donated to the NHS is property administered and used in the manner intended by the donors.
The aims of both charities are to complement NHS resources in the Newcastle Hospitals to increase patient comfort and ehnance facilities for both patients and staff. This includes enhancing the patient experience by providing additional equipment and support staff training and development and funding new and innovative research projects.
