Learning disability support

We are committed to improving the care and health of people with learning disabilities.

We do this by making reasonable adjustments to our services so they meet the individual needs of patients.

Learning Disability Liaison Service

Our Learning Disability Liaison Service promotes access to hospital services for people with learning disabilities. We directly support people with a learning disability, their carers and other hospital staff .

We work with adults and children who have a learning disability who need additional support to access hospital services in Newcastle, regardless of where they live.

What we do

Our service can help with:

  • co-ordination of care when patients attend, are admitted and discharged
  • education within clinical areas and contributing to programmes of education
  • support and advice for acute care staff relating to personalised care and delivery of services
  • working between the agencies involved in service delivery to ensure effective care
  • promotion of effective communication with those involved in the patient’s care – whether they are community or hospital-based
  • promote positive experiences and outcomes.

Films for you

We have produced a number of films to help people with a learning disability to find out about our services.

The films show what it's like to come to hospital for certain types of appointment. You can see the films below:
