Ambulance and public transport

Ambulance transport

Ambulance transport is available for patients who have a medical condition which means they are unable to make their own way to hospital.  If you feel that you need to request transport, please speak to your family doctor at least seven days before your appointment as the North East Ambulance Service may be able to help.  Click here for more information.

If you need to re-arrange this transport, please contact the Ambulance Bureau via the main hospital switchboard as soon as possible on:

Telephone:  (0191) 233 6161

Please be aware that space on the ambulance is limited and therefore you can only be accompanied by a carer or relative if you have a specific medical need.  Please ask the Ambulance Bureau staff for further information if you are unsure.

Public transport

Each of our hospitals and the International Centre for Life which houses our Fertility and Genetics Services are easy to access by public transport.

To help you get in and around Newcastle more easily, link onto the Nexus Tyne & Wear passenger transport website. Here you will find travel details for all public transport including bus routes into and out of the city centre, the extensive underground Metro system, the cross Tyne ferry service, and local rail services.
