League of Friends

The League of Friends is a voluntary organisation which supports the work of the Freeman Hospital and is able to provide much needed equipment and comforts to benefit the welfare of patients and staff through the money raised by the work of volunteers.

We are a group of ordinary people from many walks of life who freely give their time and energy to help patients, visitors and staff in a variety of ways.

Our Executive Committee meets each month to consider the needs of patients and the hospital and donates money to provide items requested.

Currently we have over 150 active members who are regularly engaged in one or more of the following voluntary services.

Main Concourse Shop

Our volunteers co-jointly run the large shop on the main concourse in collaboration with the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

They operate the cash tills and constantly replenish the shelves with drinks and snacks.

Patients' Library

We provide a library service to both patients and staff, this is also situated on the main concourse.  Books are also available for sale and a trolley service is provided to the wards.

ENT Tea Bar

Situated in the ENT Outpatients Department, we provide hot and cold drinks as well as a good selection of sweets and snacks.

Outpatient Helpers

We have helpers in Main Outpatient, ENT Outpatient and MSU Outpatient Areas.

They provide assistance to both patients and staff.

Outpatients Sales Table

The sales table situated in the Main Outpatient area has small gifts, stationery, toys and books available.

Handicrafts Trolley

A trolley service to the wards is provided by the League of Friends which sells a range of items from bed socks to jigsaws and more.
