Welcome to the Department of Laboratory Medicine

Laboratory Medicine are committed to giving you the very best in diagnostic testing.  Offering a wide range of services to meet your every need.  Laboratory investigations are essential for almost every patient who comes into contact with the hospital and almost 80% of medical diagnoses rely on laboratory investigations.

The department is based over two hospital sites - the Royal Victoria Infirmary and the Freeman Hospital - and carries out over ten million tests each year.

Departments of Haematology, Clinical Biochemistry and Microbiology have laboratories on both sites.

Departments of Cellular Pathology and Immunology have laboratories on the RVI site only.

Most tests carried out by our Biomedical Scientists are done on blood, urine, fluid or tissue samples. We use state of the art analysers and up to date techniques to ensure your results are ready as quickly and as accurately as possible.  

All laboratories hold full CPA Accreditation status and are dedicated to providing a high quality, cost effective service to the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals, local General Practitioners, community services and other NHS Trusts regionally and nationally.
