    I trained at Oxford University, Westminster Hospital and Medical school, Exeter and Newcastle Hospitals.  I was appointed consultant in Newcastle in 1990. I am an active member of British Blood transfusion society and of the International society for Blood transfusion.  I am a member of the MPD NCRN subgroup and  of the CLL forum. I lecture widely mainly on transfusion topics. My research and publications are mainly related to blood transfusion. I sit on a number of national committees or advisory groups relating to transfusion.  As well as clinical haematology I take a particular interest in laboratory medicine.

  • Biography

    I studied Medicine in Vienna, Austria where I also had my specialised medical training. From 2004 to 2009 I was Consultant Pathologist at OWS - Vienna.

    Besides my clinical work, I carried out research and my scientific work earned me the award of the ‘venia docendi’ (Associate Professor) in 2008. In September 2009, I took up a position as Reader and Honorary Consultant Pathologist in Newcastle, where I was promoted to Professor of Neuropathology in 2013.

    I was appointed Consultant Histopathologist in Newcastle in 2012 after completing an Academic Clinical Fellowship with Newcastle University. I have trained in Cologne University Hospital and in the Northern Rotation including Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, Durham and James Cook University Hospitals, and Sunderland Royal Hospital. I previously obtained an MD from Heinrich-Heine-University Düsseldorf following my medical state exam.

    My special clinical expertise includes liver/HPB/GI and breast pathology.

    I have a keen research interest in hepatopancreaticobiliary diseases including PBC, fatty liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma; as well as breast and colorectal carcinoma.

    Dr Amira El-Sherif trained in the North East of England. She is a Consultant Histopathologist with a specialist interest in Gynaecological and Urological Pathology based at the RVI, Newcastle, where she is the Lead for Urological Histopathology. 

    She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists and is an examiner for the FRCPath. She has a large regional second/expert opinion practice, which generally consists of the most difficult and diagnostically challenging urological cases.

    She has wide experience in testicular tumour pathology, as she is the Lead Pathologist for the Regional Testicular Supranetwork MDT group, which reviews and manages all testicular tumours in the northen region.

    She continues to be active in collaborative research relating to Urological Oncology. She has several peer-reviewed publications predominantly in Uropathology including review papers.

    I have over 26 years experience of surgical pathology.

    I am currently the Lead Dermatopathologist and deputy Clinical Director for Laboratory Medicine. Previously, I was the Clinical Head of Cellular Pathology for over four years.

    My clinical interests include benign and malignant melanocytic lesions, and skin cancers. My main speciality is dermatopathology and I work closely with dermatologists, dermatological surgeons and plastic surgeons. Urological pathology is my second speciality.

    Among my other professional activities, I am an RCPath examiner, Appraisal Lead for the Directorate and member of the Conjoint Board of RCPath. My other passion is Management and Leadership, attended various leadership courses and awarded a fellowship, jointly by RCPath and DoH.

  • Biography

    Dina trained in medicine at the University of Patras, Greece and obtained PhDs from the University of Athens, Greece (1993) and Newcastle University, UK (1998). She has trained in pathology and subspecialised in hepatobiliary pathology in Greece, England and USA.

    Dina has practiced pathology since 1992 and is an invited member of two influential international groups specialising in the field of liver pathology – the Laennec Liver Pathology Society and the International Liver Study Group “Gnomes”.

    Her main research interest is fatty liver disease and hepatocarcinogenesis but she has also worked in other areas of liver, gastrointestinal and tumour pathology. She has contributed chapters in books on liver pathology and histology and has published over 100 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals. She has given invited lectures on liver pathology in numerous international and national conferences.

    Dina is member of the Council of the European Society of Pathology and member of the Scientific Committee of the United European Gastroenterology federation (Deputy Co-ordinator of the Hepato-pancreatobiliary group, 2011-2015). She serves as member of the Editorial Board of international scientific journals (including “Liver International” and “Histopathology”) and she is invited reviewer for major pathology, gastroenterology and hepatology journals.

    I work in the Northern Centre for Bone Marrow Transplantation and hold a Wellcome Intermediate Fellowship (2013-2018) for research. I completed a degree in Natural Sciences at Cambridge before turning to medicine, studying again in Cambridge and at University College London.  I undertook my specialist haematology training in Newcastle, where I have remained ever since. I was appointed as a consultant in 2011.
    In the research laboratory I study how dendritic cells, important regulators of the immune system, are formed from the bone marrow and how this can go wrong in bone marrow diseases or as a result of faulty genes. Previous research has been funded by BrightRed, The George Walker Trust, The BSH and the MRC.

    I have been a Consultant Haematologist in Newcastle since 2001 and Clinical Director since 2005.
    I am Co-Director of the Newcastle Haemophilia Centre and active in the UK Haemophilia Centres Doctors Organisation (UKHCDO). I am currently chair of the UKHCDO Musculoskeletal Working Party.
    I am interested in all aspects of bleeding, thrombosis and anticoagulation – particularly the reversal of over-anticoagulation. I am lead clinician for the community anticoagulation service.
    I have a big interest in Medical Training and Education and was previously Clinical Tutor (2008-2011). I am an examiner in Haematology for the Royal College of Pathologists.

I also work as part of the bone marrow transplant team managing patients from referral and initial assessment, through transplant into long term follow-up.

  • Biography

    Professor Jackson works in Haematology/Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplantation at Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and is a Professor of  Clinical Haematology at Newcastle University. He graduated from Cambridge in 1980 and went on to study medicine at the Westminster School of Medicine. He gained his MRCP in 1986 and then moved to Newcastle University to undertake his MD, which he completed in 1992.  Professor Jackson obtained his MRCPath in 1993, followed by his FRCP in 1999 and his FRCPath in 2000. He also worked at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Centre in Seattle.
    His research interests focus on the role of drug resistance in myeloma, development of long-term bone marrow transplant follow-up clinics, and the cytokine profile of acute and chronic GVHD. Clinically he has been involved in writing a number of guidelines including the BCSH anti-fungal guidelines. Professor Jackson has written a number of book chapters and has published more than 125 peer reviewed papers.
    He wasthe President of the British Society of Haematology in 2014 and was the treasurer of the society until April 2013. He is also the President of the British Society of Blood and Marrow Transplantation (BSBMT) and serves on the Clinical Trials Awards and Advisory Committee (CTAAC) as well as the Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research grants committee. He is also actively involved in the national myeloma trials committee.

    I graduated from Nottingham University in 1994 and completed specialist training in haematology in Newcastle in 2005 and was appointed as a consultant haematologist in 2005.
    I offer some clinics in general haematology but most of my work centres on the care of patients with haematological cancers,  particularly lymphoma and acute leukaemias.  I chair the directorate’s chemotherapy committee and the Northern Cancer Network’s Haematology Group.
    I am a member of the UK AML working group which designs national trials for patients with acute myeloid leukaemia. I am also a member of the UK Myelodysplasia Group.
    I sit on the Haematological Cancer group of the British Committee for Standards in Haematology.

    I joined the Freeman Hospital in 2010, after having spent 4 years at Harvard’s  Children’s Hospital as a post-doctoral researcher.  I completed my PhD at Cambridge University following my studies in Medicine at the Free University in Berlin and my specialist training in Haematology in the UK (St Thomas Hospital, London, Ipswich Hospital and Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge).
    I am interested in setting up an early phase trials team for our haemato-oncology patients, with the aim to ultimately bring novel targeted therapy to the Freeman Hospital. I am the Chief investigator on the TIDaL trial and Prinicipal investigator on several trials.
    At the national level, I am member of the adult acute lymphoblastic leukaemia working group and I am on the steering group for the UKALL14 trial. I am member of the national Lymphoma Clinical Study Group and member of the national low grade lymphoma working group.

    I am a Consultant Haematologist at the Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Professor of Haematology at Newcastle University. I qualified in Manchester in 1987 and following training and research jobs at the Hammersmith/Imperial College in London, I have been a consultant in Newcastle since 1999.
    I am the Chief Investigator for the National Cancer Research Network’s SPIRIT trials in chronic myeloid leukaemia, and member of the European Leukemia Network. I am also a member of NICE Technology Appraisal Committee C and co-chair of the North of England Cancer Drug Fund.

    I graduated from London University in 1989 and undertook Specialist training in Haematology in Oxford 1992-2000, including a period of research leading to an MD and then completed training in Newcastle  in 2003 and was appointed as a Consultant Haematologist in 2003. I am co-director of the Newcastle Haemophilia comprehensive care centre and Chair of the trust’s VTE committee. I am a member of the UKHCDO Inhibitor working party and am the Principal investigator for a number of clinical trials in bleeding disorders, ITP and thrombosis . I am involved in the Specialist training of doctors in Haematology and was TPD 2010-2014 and have been the National lead for recruitment for the JRCPTB since 2012 and and Vice Chair of the National SAC in Haematology  from 2015.

    I trained at Oxford University, Westminster Hospital and Medical school, Exeter and Newcastle Hospitals.  I was appointed consultant in Newcastle in 1990. I am an active member of British Blood transfusion society and of the International society for Blood transfusion.  I am a member of the MPD NCRN subgroup and  of the CLL forum. I lecture widely mainly on transfusion topics. My research and publications are mainly related to blood transfusion. I sit on a number of national committees or advisory groups relating to transfusion.  As well as clinical haematology I take a particular interest in laboratory medicine.

    Having attended Medical School at the University of Sheffield, I completed my pre-registration training in Sheffield.  My post-graduate medical training was in Newcastle before taking a registrar post in Immunology based in the Royal Victoria Infirmary.  During this post I completed a Certificate in Clinical Education and I now continue to teach undergraduates in the Medical and Dental School.  I was appointed as Consultant Immunologist in October 2009 and undertake outpatient clinics specifically advising on the management of allergy, urticaria and angioedema, primary and secondary immunodeficiency and investigation of vasculitis.  I am also involved in managing the CPA accredited Immunology Laboratory.
