The Health Improvement Team supports clinical services in providing information about healthcare, ways of preventing ill health and creative and proactive approaches to health.  The team creates, develops and co-ordinates a wide range of projects, programmes and policies to improve the health of the local population. This includes the following areas of work:

  • Sexual health (click here for the Newcastle Sexual Health Training Programme which includes training on assertiveness skills, self esteem and a wide range of related issues)
  • Healthy schools
  • Mental health
  • Tobacco control (see www.freshne.com)
  • Health and housing
  • Food and nutrition
  • Health at work
  • Vulnerable young people
  • Men’s health
  • You’re Welcome (helping health services become more young people friendly)

These are targeted particularly at those living in areas or populations of disadvantage within Newcastle.

The team also provides support, training, consultancy and advice to other health promoters on all aspects of health improvement. Core to the service is partnership work, particularly with the City Council, as well as community and voluntary organisations.
