‘Occupational therapists and support workers help people engage as independently as possible in the activities (occupations) which enhance their health and wellbeing’
The Occupational Therapy department is comprised of a number of teams, with different specialties, covering all hospital sites that form Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS trust.
The information on this part of the trust web site is designed to give you an overview of what the Occupational Therapy teams do, and who you may need to talk to if you need Occupational Therapy.
The Occupational Therapy department strives to continually develop and remain up to date with the dynamic environment of healthcare. To achieve this we have an Occupational Therapy Strategic Plan . The Strategy covers four main areas for development:
Through this structured approach we hope to cover all aspects of the service. Each element of the strategy is lead by a specific Senior member of staff. However the overall achievement is only being reached by contributions from all members of the department. As a result the Occupational Therapy department has a strong ethic of teamwork and a communal responsibility to make the department the best it can be.
As part of delivering excellent patient care, the department continues to adapt to the changing and challenging health needs of the population it serves. To ensure staff skills and clinical practice remain at a high quality the Occupational Therapy department ensures that a number of activities are core to the teams:
We strongly believe that learning and acquiring skills and knowledge continues throughout a person's career. To support this we have regular teaching and training sessions held on both a departmental and team level, to update our staff on the latest developments within their field. This teaching and development is based on the current research available.
The Occupational Therapy department not only strives to develop the staff members it currently has, but contributes to the development and teaching of Occupational Therapy students. The department offers work based placements for Students predominantly from Northumbria and Teesside universities. The department also works strongly with the Universities to contribute to teaching on a larger scale.
