Chronic disease monitoring service

The Chronic Disease Monitoring Service provides a community phlebotomy (blood taking) service to patients in clinics at GP surgeries across Newcastle.

If requested by your GP we also visit housebound patients at home in order to take blood.

The service also provides a community monitoring scheme for patients prescribed Disease Modifying Anti Rheumatic Drugs (DMARDs) for rheumatoid disease. These drugs are prescribed to help slow down the progression of rheumatoid diseases e.g. Rheumatoid Arthritis.

The service takes blood samples from patients receiving DMARDs to make sure that the medication they are taking is not having a negative effect on them.  DMARD monitoring clinics are held throughout Newcastle at GP practices and home visits can also be made if required. Patients are referred into the service by their Rheumatology consultant or their GP.
