The Newcastle community weight management programme is an eight week course designed to help people with long term weight management problems lose weight and change their outlook towards healthy eating and exercise.
The course includes advice about healthy eating, an activity programme, and goal planning. The emphasis throughout is about feeling supported and having fun whilst making these lifestyle changes.
Weight loss is approached by helping participants adopt a healthy eating plan and develop fitness levels with an individualised gentle activity programme.
This approach is also part of the preparation for those who may be considered for weight management surgery or medication.
Along with losing weight the programme aims to help participants:
The weight management programme is delivered by a team of motivated, enthusiastic, health care professionals comprising of a specialist nurse, a dietician, a clinical psychologist, a physiotherapist, fitness instructor and administrator.
On completion of the programme participants are encouraged and supported to access suitable services to help them them maintain the changes they have made.
Referral to the level three weight management programme is made via a health professional, including GPs, practice nurses or hospital doctors. Referral can only be made for patients registered with a Newcastle GP.
Alternatively the level two weight management programme, which is run by Newcastle City Council's leisure services staff, can be accessed directly by participants by contacting the team on 0191 2788558.
