Accident & Emergency Services

Accident & Emergency Department

Contact: (0191) 233 6161 (Switchboard) - Ext 22709

The only Accident & Emergency Department for Newcastle is based at Newcastle General Hospital in the west of the city.  Here we see all emergency patients, children as well as adults with complex injuries and illnesses.

No appointment is necessary and the A&E department never closes, staying open 24 hours a day, 7days a week. The service is consultant-led, supported by a wide range of other medical and nursing staff, including specially trained paediatric nurse practitioners.  We also have a nursery nurse for our younger patients.

The department has a dedicated observation ward where stable patients awaiting transfer to another ward can be monitored in more comfortable surroundings.

Within the hospital grounds we have our own helipad for the receipt and transfer of patients from across the north of England requiring emergency care.

Who should go to A&E?

Emergency patients requiring immediate medical attention.
