Children's Emergency Department
Royal Victoria Infirmary, Richardson Road, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 4LP
Newcastle's Children's Emergency Department is open 24 hours, every day of the year in a specially designed and purpose-built area for infants, children and young people who need immediate care for every kind of injury and illness you can think of.
Coming into hospital when you are little - or indeed if you are a parent or carer of a young child - can be daunting at the best of times, so we know how upsetting it can be when there has been an accident or rapid onset of illness.
The department is run by medical staff specially trained in paediatric (children's) healthcare, as well as advanced paediatric nurse practitioners, nursing staff and nursery nurses. All are highly trained to provide high quality, urgent and emergency care for children. Being seen quickly by these specialists is particularly important for the youngest of patients, especially those under the age of five.
As the service is situated directly next to the Great North Children's Hospital, our staff can ensure rapid and seamless access to all the other paediatric specialists and facilities that are based there. This includes operating theatres and a specialist intensive care unit, should they be needed.
We care for patients from all over the North East, so our staff expect to see over 23,000 young patients every year, from birth all the way up to 16 years of age.
If you are interested in the work of the Children's Emergency Department, please contact us on 0191 282 6111.
If you are unsure about what to do if your child is hurt or becomes unwell, please call the NHS emergency and urgent care service on tel: 111.
In an emergency, always call 999.
