Qualified in 1980, appointed as Consultant in 1993 and as to Head of Department in 1994. Responsible for unification of Newcastle’s A&E services and its reconfiguration into one major A&E Department with a Walk-in Centre and Minor Injury Unit. I have worked closely with the Primary Care Trust in implementing the Out of Hours GP Service in 2004 and I am responsible for commissioning of the new Emergency Department at the Royal Victoria Infirmary site planned for 2010, as well as any future developments that may occur during this time.
Registered nurse since 1982, graduated in Newcastle. In 1985 completed Accident & Emergency Nurse ENB 199 training in Liverpool. In 1995 obtained post graduate certificate in Management Studies from Northumbria University and in 2000 completed Masters degree in Advanced Clinical Practice also at Northumbria University. I have worked in A&E for 24 years progressing career to my current Matron position, which is the highest position a nurse can hold. Currently I have 24 hour responsibility and provide leadership to a team of nurses and operational management for the A&E Department NGH, Minor Injury Unit and Emergency Admission Unit at the RVI.
Registered as a General Nurse at Dryburn Hospital in 1980. Trained as an A& E nurse in Leicester and arrived at Newcastle Hospitals as an A& E sister in 1986. I expanded my role as a Nurse Practitioner in 1998 and went to Northumbria University in 2002 to train as a Paediatric Nurse. On returning to A&E in 2002 I combined my training and experience to develop and implement Paediatric Nurse Practitioners in the A&E Department. In 2004 I moved to lead the team of experienced Nurse Practitioners in the co-located Walk in Centre. My role has incorporated the Nurse–led service in the Northern Doctors Out of Hours Service, as well as managing the nurse practitioners in the Walk in Centre service. I was one of the first non-medical prescibers in the Trust and am presently in the final year of my MBA at Northumbria University.
