    Trained in Cardiff Newcastle, Toronto and Leeds. NHS Consultant 13 years, all at Freeman. Developed interests in endobronchial therapy and chest wall benign and malignant conditions. In post three years have co lead an initiative for plating if acute rib fractures in selected patients. Member of SAC in Cardiothoracic surgery  and have progressed national  selection into ST3 and latterly, ST1 levels.  I sit on the exam board for the specialty and am the specialty dean until April 2014. I also sit on the lung section of the National Cancer Intelligence Network.

    I graduated from Newcastle Medical School in 2001 and have completed both my junior and senior surgical training in the Northern Deanery, gaining my FRCS in 2011.

    I wrote my Masters thesis on 'Staphylococcus aureus' and biofilm formation at Durham University, graduating in 2008.

    I completed fellowship training in Orthopaedic Oncology at Mount Sinai Hospital, Toronto, Canada in 2013 and was appointed as a Consultant in the Newcastle Trust after this.

    I am on the executive committee of the British Orthopaedic Oncology Society and am involved in charitable work for Sarcoma UK and the Bone Cancer Research Trust.

    I qualified as a doctor from Edinburgh in 1988 and trained as a paediatrician in Leeds, Manchester, Brisbane and Newcastle. I have been a consultant in Paediatric Oncology in Newcastle since 2003.

    As the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health College Tutor for Newcastle, I am responsible for the training of junior doctors in children’s services here. I am the unit lead for early phase clinical trials in children’s cancer.

  • Biography

    I qualified in medicine from The University of Edinburgh in 1989 and trained in Orthopaedic Surgery in Glasgow, where I was Clinical Lecturer at the University of Glasgow. I completed my Orthopaedic training in Toronto, Canada with Fellowships in Orthopaedic Oncology and Lower Limb Reconstruction at the Mount Sinai Hospital.

    I gained the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1993 and the specialist Fellowship in Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery in 1999. In 2005 I graduated with a higher degree (MD) having written a thesis on the subject of adult soft tissue tumours.

    I was appointed as a Consultant at the Freeman Hospital in 2001. I am interested in research in bone and soft tissue tumours, and hip and knee replacement. I am a Past President of the British Orthopaedic Oncology Society, and a member of the National Cancer Research Institute Sarcoma Studies Group.

  • Biography

    Qualified in medicine from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1990 and trained in general medicine (gaining MRCP in 1993) and radiology (gaining FRCR in 1997). After a Cook Fellowship training in vertebroplasty in Strasbourg, appointed  consultant radiologist at Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals in 2002, with a special interest in musculoskeletal imaging.

     

    I am the lead radiologist for the bone and soft tissue tumour service. I give frequent local, national and international lectures, has numerous publications in musculoskeletal journals and is an assistant editor for the journal Clinical Radiology. I am currently the secretary of the British Society of Skeletal Radiologists and has acted as an advisor to NICE and the Department of Health.

    Having graduated from Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy Bucharest Romania, I completed my early medical training in Norwich, East Anglia.  My Clinical Oncology training was in the Northern Deanery, and I gained my FRCR fellowship in 2003. Having fallen in love with the North East, I was appointed as a Consultant Clinical Oncologist in 2004.  I  specialize in non-surgical treatments for breast cancer and soft tissue sarcoma radiotherapy.
    After being involved in medical education as Training Program Director for the Clinical Oncology Northern Deanery  training scheme ( 2009 to 2014) I have taken the role of Clinical Governance lead,  oncology team at NCCC ( 2015 to date).

    I completed my undergraduate and post-graduate training in the Midlands, then returned to the North as a Consultant. I was appointed at the Northern Centre for Cancer Care in 2010.
    My clinical practice involves adult brain and CNS tumours, sarcoma radiotherapy and paediatric radiotherapy. I am the Lead Clinician for Teenage and Young Adult cancer within the Trust and for the wider network across the North East. I am a member of the British Neuro-Oncology Society (BNOS) and Children’s Cancer and Leukaemia Group (CCLG). I also have a keen interest in training and education.

    Professor Manas was educated and trained in Cape Town, South Africa and completed fellowships at ‘Johns Hopkins - USA’ and ‘Paul-Brousse, Paris’. He was the recipient of the ’CJ Adams/Sandoz Traveling Fellowship’ to the UK in 1993 and joined the NHS at the Freeman Hospital in 1994.

    Professor Manas attained a personal chair in Transplantation at Newcastle University in  2007 and has been instrumental in successfully developing three super-regionally funded transplant programmes in the North East of England - namely: Liver, Pancreas and Islet transplantation – as well as establishing and managing Liver and Pancreas cancer surgery in Newcastle.

    Professor Manas is also a member of a number of national committees including NICE, Liver and Pancreas Advisory Groups, British Transplant Society and ELTA and was recently involved in re-designing the organ donor retrieval service on a national level. He is also Chair of the Transplant Surgeons Forum and has a well established national and international research reputation in primary liver cancer, radio-frequency ablation of liver tumours and liver transplantation for primary liver cancer.

    More recently Professor Manas has been developing the UK’s very first ‘Institute for Transplantation’ on the Freeman Hospital site – a fully integrated facility dedicated to all aspects of transplantation as well as fostering research and development all under one roof.

    I completed my Medical Oncology training in Newcastle in 2007.  During this time I completed a PhD looking at molecular biology in soft tissue sarcoma.  I took up my first consultant post in Aberdeen in 2008 specialising in the treatment of breast cancer, ovarian cancer and more recently sarcoma.  I moved back to Newcastle in 2013 to take up my current post specialising in sarcoma and breast cancer.  I am based at the NCCC, Freeman Hospital and do clinics in Sunderland and South Tyneside.  I am a member of the EORTC STBSG.

    Mark is Head of the Department of Medical Oncology, and the deputy lead clinician for breast cancer in the North of England Cancer Network. He is a member of the National Cancer Research Institute (NCRI) Breast Clinical Studies Group.
    After studying medicine at Cambridge and University College London, he completed medical oncology training at the Royal Marsden Hospital and the Institute of Cancer Research.   He moved to Newcastle in 1999 as Cancer Research UK Senior Lecturer in Medical Oncology before taking up his current NHS post in 2007.  His main interest is systemic therapies in breast cancer with a strong focus on clinical trials.
