Breast Screening & Assessment Service

About breast screening

Breast screening is an x-ray examination of the breasts - this is also called a mammogram.

It is a method of finding breast cancer at a very early stage.

We carry out mammograms on mobile breast screening units at locations across the North East.

Why do we screen?

Routine breast screening can help to find small changes in the breast before there are any other signs or symptoms. Early detection can mean that treatment is simpler, and has a better chance of success.

One in eight women will develop breast cancer at some time in their life. The NHS breast screening programme saves around 1,300 lives every year.

Who do we screen?

Women aged 50 to 70

Women aged between 50 and 70 years old are invited for breast screening every three years. If women are registered with a GP, they will automatically be invited for a breast screening appointment before their 53rd birthday.

We invite each GP practice for screening in turn, so women will not necessarily get their invitation in the year that they turn 50.

If you are over 50 and you are unsure when you will be called for your screening appointment, you can call the Newcastle Breast Screening Office on the number below.

The Breast Screening Service in Newcastle is currently part of an age expansion trial which involves inviting some women for screening from 47 years old. You can read more about the age expansion trial.

Women over 70

Women over 70 years old are not automatically invited to attend breast screening, however they are still entitled to be screened. Women over 70 will need to ring their screening service every three years to book their appointment.

Women over 70 are more at risk of developing breast cancer than younger women, so it is still important to continue being screened every three years.

If you are over 70 and would like to book your mammogram, please call the Newcastle Breast Screening Office on the number below.

The Breast Screening Service in Newcastle is currently part of an age expansion trial which involves continuing the routine invites to some women up to 73 years old. You can read more about the age expansion trial.
