Breast Screening & Assessment Service

Screening appointments

If you are aged between 50 and 70 years old and are registered with a GP, you will receive a routine breast screening appointment every three years.

We invite nearly 50,000 women per year to attend for a mammogram. The invitations are sent in the post automatically so you do not need to contact us to make the appointment. If you are over 70 years old, you will not be sent an invitation, but we encourage you to call the Newcastle Breast Screening Service to book an appointment.

Your appointment date

When you receive your letter, you will be given a date, time and location for your appointment. Please contact us (number below) if:

  • your appointment time is not convenient for you
  • you do not wish to attend your screening appointment. This will allow someone else to use the appointment slot
  • you use a wheelchair or have a disability as you may need a longer appointment
  • you receive your appointment letter and have had a mammogram in the last six months - please let us know.

If you have symptoms or you are concerned about changes with your breasts seek advice from your GP straight away (see our breast awareness page for more details). Do not wait until your routine screening appointment.

If your GP feels you would benefit from further investigation, you will be referred to your local hospital. We cannot book an appointment for you without a referral from your GP.

Where and when we screen

When you receive your appointment letter, your screening appointment will be held at

The Breast Screening Assessment Clinic is located in the New Victoria Wing of the RVI. We screen here all year round.

The mobile units move around the local area, depending on which GP surgeries' patients we are screening. The trailers are normally parked in a location that is easy to find, such as a local supermarket car park or leisure centre. Trailers stay on-site for a few months while we screen the GP surgeries' patients in that area.

You should be invited to a location close to your GP practice. However, if this is inconvenient please call us on the number below to rearrange.

The table below shows where our mobile units are currently located.

When we screen

Once every three years we contact each GP surgery, and every eligible woman registered at that practice will be invited. This means that women will not necessarily get their invitation in the year that they turn 50.

The timetable below shows when we will be screening in your GP surgery area:

  • (Tn) means trailer is in this area
  • (S) means static unit at the RVI

Alnwick Ashington Bedlington Berwick
Blyth   Byker Consett Cramlington
Gosforth Haltwhistle (T3) Hexham Jesmond
Longbenton Morpeth Newcastle Central A Newcastle Central B
Newcastle East Newcastle West A (S) Newcastle West B North Shields (T1)
Ponteland Prudhoe Stanley (T2) Walkergate
Wallsend Whitley Bay

Age extension trial

The Newcastle Breast Screening Service is part of the National NHS Breast Screening Programme and we are currently involved in running an 'age extension trial'. This means that we are screening women from the age of 47 to 73.

The women within the screening age groups of 47 to 49 and 71 to 73 have been 'randomised'. This means that, the age extension trial only affects half of the women in these age groups.

For more information on the age extension trial, please see the Age Extension Full Randomised Control Trial website.
