Being diagnosed with cancer is a stressful experience and we know that getting information which is up to date and easy to understand is of enormous benefit – helping you to adjust to living with cancer. We are committed to ensuring you have easy access to as much information as you require. At the NCCC we have one of the largest Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Centres in the North-East of England – a purpose built library specialising in all aspects of cancer where you will find exactly what you need from a wide range of written and audio-visual material on treatments, services, support groups and complementary therapies.
We also arrange courses and drop-in sessions where you can share your experiences and get all the support and encouragement you need. Open evenings are held monthly at the centre so you, and anyone you would like to bring along, can familiarise yourselves with the building, its facilities and where to find everyday necessities such as the toilets and places to get something to eat.
The Information Centre carries a well-stocked library of leaflets and booklets, as well as providing internet access for patients and carers, so that any information not held in the Centre can be accessed via the web. We use material from a range of organisations and you may find it useful to access their web pages directly, by clicking on the useful websites module on the right hand side.
The Centre is managed by a specialist cancer health care professional, currently a senior therapy radiographer, supported by a specially trained team of volunteers. As well as providing information, our staff are here to offer a sympathetic ear not only to patients but also to relatives and carers. There are facilities available for private discussion if required.
The Centre hosts open evenings for new radiotherapy patients on the first Tuesday of every month. These sessions last around one hour from 5.30 pm and provide an opportunity for patients and families or carers to come to the centre, meet some of the staff and see some of the imaging and treatment facilities before their treatment commences. If you would like to attend an open evening, please contact the Centre Manager on (0191) 2138612.
The majority of the information at the Centre has been generously provided by NCCC’s resident charity, Charlie Bear for Cancer Care, in addition to contributions by local organisations, businesses and members of the public. Find out more about how you can help on the following link:
