The Macmillan Cancer Information & Support Centre was established in 2002 as part of a national programme to provide Cancer Information Centres throughout the UK. The Centre comes under the auspices of the North of England Cancer Network and is located at the Northern Centre for Cancer Treatment (NCCT) at the Newcastle General Hospital.
The Centre is open from 10.00am until 4.00pm, Monday to Friday and provides information and advice (written and audio visual where appropriate) on different cancers, tests, treatments and complementary therapies, as well as contacts for local self-help and support groups to assist with the practicalities of living with cancer. Our NCCT staff can also refer you to other support services, such as Welfare Rights Officers.
The Information Centre carries a well-stocked library of leaflets and booklets, as well as providing internet access for patients and carers, so that any information not held in the Centre can be accessed via the web. We use material from a range of organisations and you may find it useful to access their web pages directly, by clicking on the useful websites module on the right hand side.
The Centre is managed by a specialist cancer health care professional, currently a senior therapy radiographer, supported by a specially trained team of volunteers. As well as providing information, our staff are here to offer a sympathetic ear not only to patients but also to relatives and carers. There are facilities available for private discussion if required.
The Centre hosts open evenings for new radiotherapy patients on the first Tuesday of every month. These sessions last around one hour from 5.30 pm and provide an opportunity for patients and families or carers to come to the centre, meet some of the staff and see some of the imaging and treatment facilities before their treatment commences. If you would like to attend an open evening, please contact the Centre Manager on (0191) 256 3596.
The majority of the information at the Centre has been generously provided by NCCT’s resident charity, Charlie Bear for Cancer Care, in addition to contributions by local organisations, businesses and members of the public. Find out more about how you can help on the following link:
