Northern Centre for Cancer Care

Ward 36, Chemotherapy Day Unit and Supportive Therapies Day Unit

Ward 36 is divided into two subsections - Chemotherapy Day Unit and Supportive Therapies Day Unit.  It provides a safe and friendly environment for patients with solid and haematological cancers receiving chemotherapy or supportive treatments respectively.

Chemotherapy Day Unit
Our staff have many years of experience in the field of oncology and haematooncology and are committed to providing a high standard of care and support to all our patients, families and carers. The process of receiving chemotherapy includes all aspects of social, physical and psychosocial care of the patient and their families.All staff are fully trained in venepuncture, cannulation, the insertion of mid-lines, care of central lines and the administration of cytotoxic drugs.

Supportive Therapies Day Unit
Our staff have many years of experience in the field of oncology and haemato-oncology and are committed to providing a high standard of care and support to all our patients, families and carers. Supportive therapies include care of central lines, placement and removal of central lines, day case biopsies, venesections, transfusions and infusions. This unit triages, assesses and manages acutely unwell patients undergoing cancer treatment.

The Chemotherapy Day Unit (Ward 36) is located on the second floor of the Northern Centre for Cancer Care(NCCC) based at the Freeman Hospital. To find us:

  • Come through the Main Entrance for NCCC, and take the lift or stairs on your right hand side up to the Level 3.
  • When you come out of the lift turn to your right and after a few steps turn right again just before the large waiting area with tea bar and go through the double doors where you will find the unit's reception desk.

The clinical team in the Chemotherapy Day Unit includes cancer doctors, specialist  chemotherapy nurses and other support staff.

Things you need to know

  • Refreshments are available in the day unit or if you wish to and are able to leave the ward area during your treatment (please check with your nurse) there is a coffee shop on level 2 near the clinical trials pharmacy or alternatively on level 1, radiotherapy.
  • An average visit last for approximately 4 hours.
  • For some patients it may be possible to offer scalp cooling during chemotherapy which may reduce hair loss. Please check with your doctor if this is suitable for you.
  • There are a number of Hairloss support services - please ask your nurse or check at the Macmillan information centre on level 2.
