Cardiology
Patients with heart problems who do not require surgery can be seen at one of two of the Newcastle Hospitals. Local patients from Newcastle and the surrounding area are seen first in the Cardiology Department at the Royal Victoria Infirmary and will generally receive their treatment there.
Patients, from Newcastle or anywhere else in the UK, who need more specialist treatment are seen in the Cardiology Department at the Freeman Hospital, which has a national reputation for its expertise in dealing with electrical problems affecting the heart, as well as for angioplasty and transplantation. The pacemaker service continues to be a large and important part of our cardiology service.
Adult patients who have grown up with Congenital Heart Disease receive continuing care from our cardiologists here at Freeman Hospital.

Through our strong ties with the University of Newcastle and our Northern Genetics Service we have significant research programmes around the genetics of heart disease, allowing our Cardiology Department to continue to develop its strengths in most facets of modern day cardiology and our patients are often the first to benefit from ground-breaking new treatments

Our comprehensive range of cardiology clinical services and facilities include a Coronary Care Unit and catheter laboratories, as well as pacemaker and rehabilitation services, in addition to the usual inpatient wards and outpatient clinics.
