Contact: (0191) 223 1016 - Dr Jon Smith, Consultant Cardiothoracic Anaesthetist

The Freeman Hospital is one of only 4 hospitals in the UK providing a highly specialised service known as ECMO.  This stands for Extra Corporal Membrane Oxygenation.

ECMO is provided by a special machine called an oxygenator that acts as an artificial lung providing oxygen support for babies and young children with severe respiratory failure until their own lungs recover.

ECMO is provided for:

  • children or babies with severe lung disease and who have not responded to the usual treatment
  • children or babies with severe heart failure before or after heart surgery
  • children or babies who need support whilst waiting for a transplant

Further information can be found on the  Extracorporeal Life Support Organisation website or by contacting Dr Jon Smith, Consultant Cardiothoracic Anaesthetist.
