Older People's Medicine

Older People's Medicine

Newcastle’s population is ageing and steadily growing with advancements in treatments in medical care, and it is estimated that in 20 years time, one in five people in Newcastle will be over 65.

We provide a wide range of specialist services for older people within Newcastle, to help them maintain their independence and have more choice and control over their well being, helping them to stay active longer and enjoy the best quality of life possible. We tackle their often complex medical and functional needs through a patient-centred, multidisciplinary approach, working in close collaboration with our colleagues in the community.

Pioneering specialist care providing rapid and effective treatment

In addition to comprehensive rehabilitation services, we have pioneered a range of specialist clinics for older people, including:

  • The 1st Acute Stroke Unit in England & Wales to provide intravenous thrombolysis treatment for stroke patients which provides fast and effective treatment.
  • Our Falls & Syncope Unit  is the largest specialist unit of its kind in the UK for patients suffering from blackouts or recurrent falls.  Our clinicians have an international reputation for its research and received several national awards for innovations in clinical practice. This pioneering service has enabled us to reduce the number of falls and  we have a range of specialist rehabilitation services for those who have fallen and sustained injuries .  We can then refer these patients onto our unique ‘one stop’ Fracture Risk Assessment Service to be seen by one of our Specialist Osteoporosis Nurses, who will measure bone density and screen for osteoporosis.  We also provide expert advice on osteoporosis treatment help reduce the risk of future fractures.

Specialist rehabilition to help rebuild independence and confidence

We have a daycare facility based at the Melville Day Unit where patients with complex medical and physical conditions can be seen and appropriate treatment and support identified, preventing the need for unnecessary hospital admission.

Inpatient rehabilitation is provided at Walkergate Hospital for patients who have ongoing rehabilitation needs to maximise their independence and function following an acute illness.  Our staff here are committed to looking after each and every patient with dignity and respect, helping them to build confidence, improve well being and continue to be as mentally and physically active as possible.
