    I am a Newcastle Graduate and apart from a year spent in Phoenix, trained in the North East, gaining my Consultant post in 2002.  I work in acute medicine and older people's medicine and have a special interest in investigation and treatment of falls and blackouts in adult patients of all ages.  During my training I spent three years in full time research gaining my PhD and am now a senior lecturer at Newcastle University's Institute for Aging and Health.  My research interests lie mainly in helping develop new ways of understanding and treating patients with falls and blackouts.  In 2012 I was appointed to the role of Clinical Director for the Directorate of Medicine.

    I graduated in 1992 from Newcastle upon Tyne Medical School after school and childhood in Cramlington.

    My specialist training in geriatrics and general medicine was in the North of England, New Zealand and Sydney, Australia, where I developed the first falls and syncope service for Western Sydney.

    Research – PhD awarded in May 2006 on falls in older people. I remain involved in clinical research in this field and have developed collaborative working partnerships with the ambulance services and social services in Newcastle to help reduce falls.

    I was appointed as a consultant in 2005 and divide my clinical time between Falls and Syncope Service clinics at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, and acute and rehabilitation care for older people at the Freeman Hospital.

     I have additional interests and responsibilities in medical education and was appointed in 2010 as Assistant Director of Medical Education for the Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Trust.

    I was educated at Diocesan College in Cape Town.  I entered Medical School and graduated with a MBChB from UCT, South Africa in 1992.  I undertook postgraduate medical training in Geriatric and Stroke Medicine in Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom where I obtained my MRCP.

    Epidemiological research led to a MD from UCT in 2005 with the doctoral thesis entitled "A systematic analysis of the differences in the process of care and outcomes between patients admitted and not admitted to hospital after a stroke".

    I am currently a geriatrician and physician at the Freeman Hospital and Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle upon Tyne.  I am a specialist in stroke and elderly neuro-rehabilitation with training, skills and experience in acute stroke Thrombolysis and muscle spasticity Botulinum injections.

    I am the Consultant Lead for the Newcastle Stroke Rehabilitation Service (which was rated the best in the North East and remains one of the best Nationally).  I remain actively involved in improving stroke care and I am the Clinical Governance Lead for the Directorate of Medicine.

    I graduated from Leicester Medical School in 2000 and then commenced postgraduate training within the midlands region, obtaining my MRCP in 2003.  I moved to Newcastle in 2004 and later started specialist training in elderly care and general medicine.  I commenced my Consultant post at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in July 2013.

    I work as both an acute physician and an elderly care Consultant on the RVI site.  I am involved in developing a new acute elderly care service, with the intention of providing early specialist review or guidance into the care of older people admitted to the hospital.

    I have an interest in education at an undergraduate and postgraduate level, and have co-founded the Association of Elderly Medicine Education (AEME).  This association aims to organise and support activities related to the education of current and future elderly care physicians.

    I was appointed as a Consultant Geriatrician in 2002, having trained in Edinburgh, Newcastle and Birmingham and with a background research interest in Prevention of Falls in Older People with Cognitive Impairment and Dementia. 

    Falls prevention has continued to be my special interest.  I also have in-patient rehabilitation beds on Cherryburn Ward at the Campus for Ageing and Vitality and am responsible for the Consultant Led Continuing Care Beds at Wheatfield Court Care Home. 

    I Chair the Regional Falls Prevention Task group. 

    I have close working links with the HealthWORKS Staying Steady Community Exercise Programme (I Chair the steering group), the Newcastle Care Homes Project led by GP Colleagues and the North East Ambulance Service Falls Referral Programme. 

    I maintain a low-key-falls-related research interest.
