Care of the Elderly

Cherryburn Stroke Unit

Contact: 0191 256 3875 - Sister Claire Dickson

Cherryburn is a 20 bed mixed sex adult stroke rehabilitation unit based at the ‘Campus for Ageing and Vitality’ (previously known as Newcastle General Hospital). We are part of Newcastle Hospital’s care of the elderly services.

We aim to provide intensive rehabilitation to help stroke patients regain maximum independence.

We have a team of professionals who are involved in providing care. This includes nurses, doctors, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, dieticians, chiropodists, social workers and psychologists.

During their stay on the unit patients are assessed by the team and an individual rehabilitation programme is planned.

How can I access the service?

Patients are mainly admitted via the acute stroke unit at the Royal Victoria Infirmary although admissions are also received from the neurology department and other wards at the RVI.

Admissions are coordinated by the Single Point of Access team (0191 256 3869), who assess the patients then arrange a date for admission.
