Older People's Medicine

Cherryburn Stroke Unit

Cherryburn is a 36 bed mixed-sex adult stroke and elderly rehabilitation unit.

The unit is based at the Campus for Ageing and Vitality.

We help stroke patients to regain maximum independence by providing intensive rehabilitation services.

We are part of Newcastle Hospitals' Care of the Elderly Services, and we have a team of professionals who provide care, including:

  • nurses
  • doctors
  • physiotherapists
  • occupational therapists
  • speech and language therapists
  • dieticians
  • chiropodists
  • social workers
  • psychologists

During their stay on the unit, patients are assessed by the team and an individual rehabilitation programme is planned.

How can I access the service?

Patients are mainly admitted via the acute stroke unit at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, although admissions are also received from Neurology Services and other wards at the RVI.

Admissions are co-ordinated by Community Health and Social Care Direct, who assess the patients then arrange a date for admission.
