Patient quote

"I'd like to say thank you to all the staff on Ward 4 for all the care you gave to my mother.  It was very comforting to us, to know she was in such good hands and so well looked after.  Not only did you show immense care for her, but also for us.  You were all so considerate and we thank you for that".  Mr GF

Care of the Elderly

Ward 4 WGH

Contact: (0191) 213 8504 - Sister or Nurse in Charge

Ward 4 provides longer-term and palliative care services for older patients with chronic conditions, where the emphasis of care is to provide symptom relief and maximise quality of life. We also provide respite care for patients who have daily nursing needs at home for one or two week periods. Our patients mainly come from the east of the city.

Patients may be transferred to the ward if their medical condition indicates that they need ongoing 24-hour nursing care following an earlier admission to one of the medical or surgical wards at the RVI or Freeman Hospitals. Patients may also be admitted to the ward from home following referral by their GP. Medical care is provided by a resident doctor with consultant ward rounds on a weekly basis.
