Children’s Services at Great North Children's Hospital
At the Great North Children's Hospital (GNCH) we are proud to be one of only 14 major Children’s Medical Centres in the United Kingdom.
We provide a full range of leading Children’s Services, tailored to the individual needs of every child we see, in a safe and reassuring environment. Every member of our staff has been specially trained to look after children of all ages, from newborns to teenagers, and we also help those children with long-term conditions to adapt through adolescence into adult care.
We are committed to providing patient-centred, family-focused care to everyone who attends the GNCH.
We provide 24-hour care for emergency admissions, ensuring children are seen as quickly as possible. We also provide comprehensive outpatient and ward services for more routine cases.
We work in partnership with other local hospitals to provide Children's Outpatient Services within their facilities. This means your child doesn't have to travel too far to be seen by one of our specialists.

Research - central to healthcare
Carrying out research into a whole range of healthcare issues is an important part of improving services for our patients. Research work can help to produce new drugs, treatment techniques and diagnoses for the benefit of patients now and in the future.

Your child in the safest hands
We provide 24-hour, consultant-led care for emergency admissions, ensuring children are seen as quickly as possible, and we deliver comprehensive outpatient and ward services for more routine cases. We also work in partnership with other local hospitals, to provide children’s outpatient services from their facilities, so you shouldn’t have to travel too far to have your child seen by one of our specialists.
We deliver children’s services across the whole of the Northern region, and receive referrals from many other hospitals, locally and nationally, who do not have the necessary expertise to treat complex conditions. We are renonwned internationally for some of our services - our Bone Marrow Transplant Unit (often referred to as the "Bubble Unit") is one of only two in the country providing highly specialised care for children with Severe Combined Immune Deficiency Syndrome (also know as SCIDS).
Advanced, child-centred care
We recognise that visiting hospital can be daunting for your child and worrying and stressful for you, and we try our very best to minimise these worries. Your child will be cared for by our team of dedicated, experienced nursing staff, led by 60 highly trained Consultants. In addition, we have Hospital Play Specialists or Nursery Nurses based on all our children’s wards, supported by a whole range of hospital services dedicated to children.
Our aim is to always deliver the highest standards of children’s healthcare, and we are continually investing in our staff and our facilities to achieve this goal.
We have recently moved into the new, purpose-built GNCH,which provides the very latest technology and state-of-the-art children’s facilities to patients from across the North of England and beyond.
