Childrens Services

Childrens Services

Welcome to our Children’s Services.

At Newcastle, we’re proud to be one of only 14 major children’s medical centres in the UK where we provide a full range of leading edge children’s services tailored to the individual needs of every child we see in a safe and reassuring environment.  Each and every member of our staff has been specially trained to look after children of all ages, from newborns to teenagers, and we help those with longer term conditions to adapt through adolescence into adult care.  We are committed to providing patient-centred, family focussed care to all who come here.

We provide 24-hour, consultant-led care for emergency admissions, ensuring children are seen as quickly as possible and we deliver comprehensive outpatient and ward services for more routine cases. We also work in partnership with other local hospitals to provide children's outpatient services from their facilities, so you shouldn't have to travel too far to have your child seen by one of our specialists.

Your child in the safest hands

We provide 24-hour, consultant-led care for emergency admissions, ensuring children are seen as quickly as possible, and we deliver comprehensive outpatient and ward services for more routine cases. We also work in partnership with other local hospitals, to provide children’s outpatient services from their facilities, so you shouldn’t have to travel too far to have your child seen by one of our specialists.

Nurse and BabyWe deliver children’s services across the whole of the Northern region, and receive referrals from many other hospitals, locally and nationally, who do not have the necessary expertise to treat complex conditions.  We are renonwned internationally for some of our services - our Bone Marrow Transplant Unit (often referred to as the "Bubble Unit") is one of only two in the country providing highly specialised care for children with Severe Combined Immune Deficiency Syndrome (also know as SCIDS).

Advanced, child-centred care

We recognise that visiting hospital can be daunting for your child and worrying and stressful for you, and we try our very best to minimise these worries. Your child will be cared for by our team of dedicated, experienced nursing staff, led by 60 highly trained consultants. In addition, we have hospital play specialists or nursery nurses on all our children’s wards, supported by a whole range of hospital services dedicated to children.

Our aim is always to deliver the highest standards of children’s healthcare, and we’re continually investing in our staff and our facilities to achieve this goal. We’re currently building a new world class Children’s Hospital as part of our £300m Transforming Newcastle’s Hospitals development programme, to provide the very latest technology and state-of-the-art children’s facilities to patients from across the North of England and beyond.
