I trained in internal medicine, infectious diseases and paediatrics in London, holding a MRC Fellowship before completing training in paediatric immunology and infectious diseases at Great Ormond Street Hospital and in Paris.

A Consultant in Newcastle for 24 years, I set up one of two national referral centres for the treatment of children with severe immunological disorders and I am a world leader in the field of childhood infection, immune disorders, and bone marrow transplantation, also holding clinics in Leeds, Scotland and Ireland. My research in these areas has secured £6 million in grants, and over 150 scientific papers. I am a past President of the European Society for Paediatric Infectious Diseases and President Elect of the European Society for Immunodeficiencies. Despite being a very busy full-time NHS clinician, I was awarded a Personal Chair in 2004 for outstanding research arising from a highly regarded clinical service.  I teach at postgraduate events worldwide.

My special interests include severe and unusual infection, tuberculosis, immunodeficiency, auto-immunity and allergy. I am a member of the Bubble Foundation UK Management Committee, a local charity that has raised over £2.7 million since 1994 to support the Children's Bone Marrow Transplant Unit’s work and research; successfully pump priming research posts that now have university or NIHR funding.

As Clinical Director for Children’s Services, I led the development of the £100 million 244 bedded Great North Children’s Hospital (GNCH) which opened in November 2010. This landmark development is a focal point for excellence in children’s healthcare in the North of England. Virtually all children’s hospital services in Newcastle have been centralised in a state-of-the-art facility which creates an ultra-modern environment designed to feel as little like a hospital as possible, allowing Newcastle to further develop a world-class service to children in the North East and beyond, as part of the Great North Children’s Network.

I have led the GNCH’s participation in the Network of Acute Paediatrics for South of Tyne and Wear. In September 2013 I was appointed to Chair the Clinical Senate for Northern England.

I have practiced medicine for 36 years. I am a very committed, fascinated and enthusiastic clinician who loves the mix of patient care, science, teaching and clinical management as a means to improving understanding and care, so more patients lead full and healthy lives.
