Our Community Children’s Therapy Service’s include highly specialised Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy to children with long term disabilities and complex health needs e.g. Cerebral palsy, Muscular Dystrophy, Spina Bifida, degenerative neuropathies, and congenital problems.
We work to support the child and their family so that they can reach their greatest physical potential, including giving support to schools, respite agencies and parts of their local community that they may access.
We see children aged 0 to 19 years who live within the boundaries of Newcastle city. We have strong links with other specialist units e.g. the Child Development Centre, RVI and the Centre for Life and our acute colleagues within the hospital.
We provide a specialist assessments and treatment programmes for mobility and functional problems. This may also include respiratory management, wheelchair and orthotic provision, as well as specialist equipment and housing assessments. Specialist advice is also given to other professional involved with your child.
Our team of skilled Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists will endeavour to provide expert support and intervention within a variety of settings including the child’s home, school, sports centres, clinics and other local facilities.
We work with other agencies to assist them in providing child-centred, integrated, and measured services to your child, with the view to facilitate inclusion and equal opportunities within your child’s daily life.
In addition, for children with long term significant disabilities, we provide an Equipment and Adaptations Occupational Therapy assessment which informs the local authority in their provision of housing adaptations and equipment within your home.
Referrals to our service are via an involved health professional, the Young Children’s Team from SENTASS, or a social worker from the Children with Disabilities Team. (Specific referral forms are available).
