Paediatric Immunology

Contact: (0191) 282 5262 - Dr T J Flood, Consultant in Paediatric Immunology and Infectious Diseases (Clinical Lead)

Our Children’s Immunology Service is recognised as one of the leading clinical research units in Europe for paediatric immunology and infectious diseases, including Severe Combined Immune Deficiency Syndrome (SCIDS) and bone marrow transplants. We are one of only two UK centres dedicated to treating children with immune system deficiencies and we are pioneering new treatments to enable them to lead normal, healthy lives free of all medication.

As well as our main unit at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, we have a national remit to treat children from the Midlands up to Scotland and across to Ireland via a network of clinics in cities in those areas.

Pioneering advancements in clinical care

Each year, we see over 1,400 children with immunity and infection problems and perform more than 30 bone marrow transplants. We’ve been performing bone marrow transplants on babies and children born with defective immune systems for over twenty years, including disorders such as Severe Combined Immune Deficiency Syndrome (SCIDS). We also provide advanced care for other severe primary immunodeficiencies which usually occur in older children. We treat children suffering from leukaemia and have pioneered the use of bone marrow transplants to cure children with severe arthritis and other life threatening auto-immune diseases.

Specialist care and support when you need it

Our successful approach is focused on combining technological advancements with all-round care and support to our young patients and their families. We have a highly trained liaison team to help you prepare for your child’s transplant and to manage their aftercare. Our medical and nursing staff will be in close support for the duration of your child’s stay, providing emotional as well as practical support, and we have nursery nurses in the unit to help ensure your child continues to develop as normal while in hospital.
